Challenges
The challenges every retailer faces with technology
So your new shop is doing really well, and the volumes are picking up. You are even considering opening more branches. Of course now you have to invest in technology to make running your business easier.
Inadequate system
This can be the worst thing you ever do!
Here's why:Costs spiralling out of control
- You are now faced with unexpected upfront costs like having to purchase special server copies of Windows and expensive database server software
- No-one told you to budget for the ongoing cost of a specialist database administrator, just to make sure your new software keeps running. Not to mention the head-aches of another employee
Business processes
- It is very difficult to learn the new software. And all your staff has to be trained in using complex software. Everytime you get a new staff member, it takes them a long time to be productive
- The software does not really support your business, and you have to adapt your business to the software
- It can take more time to do a sale on your new software than it is to write the invoice out on paper
Inadequate system
- The software does not balance back to itself. This makes your month-end procedure painful and slow. You incur more costs to get an accountant to get your books to balance
- At the end of the day / week / month you cannot get useful information out of the system. The system is supposed to support your decision-making. Instead all your energy goes into running the system
- Your existing accounting package cannot talk to your new retail software, and you have to re-capture all that information
- Consolidated information from your differenct branches don't get to you on time, or worse, you cannot even get consolidated information
